Scholarshipsare believed to be for bright students only and those who are considered just ordinary because they don’t have an A average have no chance at all getting the grants. But this in not really true as there are now scholarships without essays for average students. While not requiring that students taking these types of Scholarships
have a high GPA, they do require excellence in a non-academic area.
These kinds of scholarships do not depend on academic merit, but they are more a recognition of the student’s athletic or artistic merit, community service, extracurricular activities, or on a skill in a non-academic discipline. This development has come about because the types of grantors of scholarships have widened – not only are they looking for the best in the academic field, but are looking for those individuals with expertise and skills in other areas of human endeavor.
The winners of these scholarships without essays are always the students who best reflect the goals of the scholarship sponsor. Candidates for these scholarships do not necessarily need to be academically talented, but do need to be extraordinary and amazing in other ways. No scholarship sponsor gives away money simply for breathing – they always have a reason for giving away such scholarships.
An example is the David Letterman scholarship, one that is often cited by news media. This scholarship centers on the student’s creativity, even if he lacks the academic skill. The creative student may have a very good idea although he lacks the skill to verbalize this to present the idea to others. Winners of the David Letterman scholarship are judged on their non-academic skills – but they have certain abilities in research, audio, video, graphics and film. The winner of this scholarship receives a $10,000 grant; the first runner-up receives $5,000. The second runner-up receives $3,333.
Other sources of non-academic scholarships include employers who are aware that the children of their employees need help in their studies. Outstanding employees especially are helped by the employers in the education of their children. This makes a lot of sense since the children granted these types of non-academic scholarships are potential future employees of the company of the scholarship grantor.
Other possible grantors of non-academic scholarships are church, synagogue or mosque, hobbyist groups, local businesses, community service organizations, fraternal organizations, unions and minority groups. They gave out these scholarships more as a help to the children of their members.
Many education lenders and other businesses also even use scholarship lotteries to determine those students that they will support with a grant. Obviously, people are now aware that the brightest in a group of students may not really be the best. There are others less talented academically, but who can contribute to society’s betterment in their own way.
